How to Stop Noise Coming Through the Door
A creaking door is inconvenient, especially if it gets worse over time. Unpleasant sounds from the door appear due to the fact that the hinges are poorly greased or the original position of the installed door has changed during the time.
Door Soundproofing Basics
There are four main reasons for the squeak that professionals identify:
- The door hinges are attached incorrectly – This problem can be solved by rearranging the hinges;
- The door facing material is in contact with the hinges – To remove the squeak, the cladding should be carefully removed and adjusted to the desired dimensions;
- Wrong design of ball bearing hinges – To fix the issue, the hinges are removed from the door leaf and the missing elements are put in;
- Not enough ointment or the selected ointment is not suitable – You can fix it by greasing the hinges.

Close Air Gaps
If the door is not airtight when you close it, this might be an issue. Luckily, there are different materials that will help you fix that:
- Rubber door sweeps – the material is effective at blocking the sound;
- Draft stoppers – this stuffed fabric is mounted underneath the door and is an effective soundproofing solution.
Thicken the Door
There may be several design flaws in your interior doors causing the sound to travel freely. To get it fixed, you need:
- Soundproof blankets;
- MLV;
- Acoustic foam.
How Do Interior Doors Control Sound Transmission
The task of fixing sound transmission is to be solved both immediately after door installation and during its further operation.
Doors with Hollow Core
Doors with hollow core are laminated or fiberboard wood doors similar to long, flat boxes that are mostly hollow inside. All the key points within the door construction are cardboard honeycomb spacers that help the door maintain its structure.
Doors with Solid Core
Solid core doors are made of wood and are fully filled with wood or wood composite materials. Unlike hollow core doors, solid core doors come with an engineered wood filler, fully filling the wood frame inside.
Solid Wood Doors
Solid wood doors are made of 100{b68dbc59fa3be735b7065e768983e16c35ea3fb567ca0f3bb8237a73e77a68df} natural wood. Sound-blockage is good to excellent here, depending on wood species. Softwoods like pine are not very sound-proof, whereas oak and maple are excellent at blocking sound transmission.
MDF Doors
For people who prefer a cheaper but still strong alternative to solid wood, there is MDF Wood. As a rule, such doors do not warp or crack since the material expands and contracts when there are fluctuations in temperature and humidity.
Glazed Doors
Glazed doors are a mix of classic paneling with glazed sections, making them a good choice for spreading light between rooms. Glazed doors are not the best sound-proof constructions due to glazed sections in them.
Glass Doors
Glass doors are made of tempered glass, energy-efficient, and come in a variety of styles. Glass is a pain to soundproof because the material is so thin and rattles so easily. Keep it in mind when deciding on the door construction.
